Week One, 7/17: Gone Fishing
Construct a unique, sculptural fishing boat. Kids will use stencils to cut out slab clay forms, focusing on clay joinery, to build a boat fit for a day fishing at sea! Boats will be painted using colorful underglazes. Using mixed media, they will create decorative bead-like buoys, fish, and flags to attach after the boats are fired in the kiln.
Week Two, 7/31: Ice Cream Social
Create a lidded jar disguised as a delicious ice cream sundae. Kids will use molds to make bowls, followed by lids that resemble scoops of ice cream. With a baker’s pastry bag technique, add slip (a fluid clay and water medium) to pile on “whip cream” and colorful underglazes sprinkles. Looks good enough to eat, but meant to hide a treat!
Week Three, 8/14: In the Garden
Sculpt a bird-inspired pitcher to water the plants- and a mini potted plant too! Kids will use a pinch-pot technique to form the bird into shape then add a beak-spout to be able to pour water from. Create a small potted plant to complete the set, but this one won’t need water!
Week Four, 8/28: Around the Campfire
Make a campfire candle holder wall-hanging. Using various techniques practiced throughout this class series, kids will create their own imagined campfire scenes with a fire shaped dish attached to hold a tea-light candle. After using colorful underglazes to paint a scene, kids will use sgraffito carving to add texture to their work. A special piece to bring the light of a campfire into the home.
