KILN RENTAL
We offer kiln rentals for ceramic artists working at home. We have Skutt electric kilns and fire primarily to cone 6, with cone 10 available upon request. We offer both bisque and glaze firing options. Artists can rent a full kiln or a partial kiln.
FIRING WORK AT MUDCITY
We have two options for firing work in our kilns when you are not a member or a student:
PAY-TO-FIRE: Small Collections
As the name states, good for small collections, just a few pieces at a time, or renting out a whole kiln.
PAY-TO-FIRE: Measured
You’ll measure each piece individually and pay per cubic inch.

Measurements
We bisque fire to cone 05 and glaze fire to cone 6 in our studio, but could vary slightly, if requested.
Our board dimensions are: 40 inches long and 15 inches wide and 16 inches tall. Calculation for square inch: 40 x 15 x 16 = 9,600 square inches per shelf

Once settled on a delivery date, we will schedule the firing. Kiln firing and unloading takes approximately 2 days, but expect around a week between drop off and your work being ready to be picked up. Pictures of work dropped off are encouraged, but giving us a number of pieces dropped off is required in order to make sure everything is packed up properly.
When renting a kiln, please look at the dimensions listed next to kiln options to let us know which kiln you believe you'd be able to fill. Prices vary depending on the type of firing.
Please note that we are not responsible for any broken or damaged work. If it breaks while loading, we will still fire it, and you will still be charged. Same for glaze work, we are not responsible for anything that is damaged or comes out differently than you want. You are paying for a service of firing what you drop off.
We ask that you provide cookies to put under each piece to be glaze-fired to protect our kiln shelves from glaze drips and damage. Cookies are slabs of clay that are large enough to catch any glaze running. Cookies must be biscuit-fired before going into the glaze firing.
If there is damage to our shelves, you will be required to pay a fee — this is determined by the amount of surface area damaged on the shelf. This is usually between $25-75.
If we find that you dropped off more work than can fit into the kiln you have selected, we will have to adjust pricing to either move you to a larger kiln or fire the kiln selected more than once. We will communicate with you before we make this shift. If this happens, the proposed timeline may be altered so please be as accurate as possible when assessing your kiln needs.
To give you an idea of how much we normally fit into our kilns, we have listed the measurements of the boards we store work on while it is waiting to be fired. We plan our firings around how many boards are full.
The number of pieces that can be loaded in a bisque is more than a glaze. In a bisque firing, work can be stacked but it can’t in a glaze firing. Please consider if you are bringing in a lot of flat items, a lot of tall pieces etc. as this will affect how much space you will actually need.
Our studio manager, Clara Andross, will be the contact person for all delivery / pickup info. Fill out the request form and she’ll be in touch.
